Classical Concert
Theatr John Ambrose ( Brynhyfryd School) will be the location for one of the highlights of the Festival this year, when the Classical Concert will be held on Wednesday, 28 June, 2006.
Welsh soprano, making a name for herself in the opera world, Fflur Wyn, will be making her first appearance at the Festival. She is extremely well known to eisteddfodwyr in Wales, having won the Bryn Terfel Scholarship at the National Eisteddfod in the last few years. Since then, her accolades have soared, and include the first prize and audience prize at the National Handel Competition last year plus the London Welsh Singer of the Year 2005. Fflur is currently studying opera at the Royal Academy and will, during the year, perform Iphis in Handel's Jeptha for the Welsh National Opera. The soprano from Ammanford, has a vast repertoire, and is sure to astound the audience with her beautiful voice.
Joining Fflur on stage will be Dewi Ellis Jones, a young percussionist of outstanding ability from Llanfairpwll. Following his Bangor University degree, Dewi achieved a Master degree and a performance diploma from the Royal School of Music. He is continuing with his studies, working towards a Doctorate in performance and composition, and has recently started studying with world renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie.
Dewi excels at the marimba, a 12 foot idiophone that is sounded by striking wooden bars with a mallet. He produces an amazing array of sound ranging from the emotional to the electrifying. His repertoire is as diverse as the instrument he uses, he ranges from baroque transcriptions to the very latest in modern music. He truly is a dramatic performer and a master of his tools.
The third act confirmed to perform at the Classical Concert will be Celticana, Wales' leading string quartet from West Wales. The all female quarter consist of Sali-Wyn, Kathryn James, Lucy Morgan and Nerys Richards. All four found themselves studying in London, three at the Guildhall school of Music and the other at the Royal College of Music.
This will be Celticana's second performance at Ruthin, and will no doubt be as spectacular as ever. With two violins, a viola and a cello player, their abilities offers a versatile performance ranging from the classical to the contemporary.
Mike Baines , Festival Chairman said: "It is great to be able to offer quality musicians at our Classical Concert yet again this year. All three acts will offer a fantastic array of music which is sure to attract a large crowd to the Theatr. We're looking forward to the event."
